Love your husband, your wife, your boyfriend, your girlfriend. Fancy dinners, flowers and chocolates. Expensive jewelry and big plans. The most anticipated day in February.
Valentine’s Day is a day all about love. You are encouraged to show how much you love your significant other on this day, whether it is with flowers, chocolate, or gifts, society encourages us to do something to show our love to our significant other.
But what about when you are parent? It’s not just your significant other that holds your heart anymore. Those beautiful little babies that you carried for nine months have taken over and expanded your heart in ways that you didn’t even know was possible. So maybe we should make an effort to show them how much we love them, too?
When I was a kid, my mom did this for me and my brothers. Every Valentine’s Day morning, we would wake up to a special little gift in our rooms from her. Some years it was a stuffed animal or chocolate, and other years it was things like a jewelry box or matching necklaces. I always felt extra special on Valentine’s Day when I woke up to a present from my mom! And of course, I always had something for her that I usually had made at school to give her. But getting that little something extra really made my day. Isn’t that what the day is all about?
Now as a mom, I want to give my girls the same sense of excitement and fond memories of their childhood that I have. For me, seeing the joy and happiness on their faces is better than any gift I could be given. To know that my kids know they are loved is all that my mama heart wants.
