Today we hit a parenting milestone. Our baby girl went off to her very first day of preschool!
She was so excited to be there! We got her uniform and backpack ready the night before. I let her pick out a special nail polish color for her nails for the first day. She was ready to go.
This morning as we were getting ready, I was telling her all about what her day would hold. She would get to meet new friends, have lunch with them, get to learn new things and play outside. She was getting more excited by the minute! During the drive there, her nerves started to get the better of her. She told us that she had a tummy ache, although I suspect that it was nerves, and not a real tummy ache. As we pulled into the parking lot, she recognized her school and instantly her face just lit up! She exclaimed, “I’m so excited to be here mommy and daddy!!”
We walked her to her class – they were playing outside – and she sat down and listened to the rules and jumped right in and started playing with the other kids. We watched her for a few minutes to make sure that she was comfortable, snapped a few quick pictures, and we left our big girl to enjoy her first day of preschool.
It was a proud moment as her parents, but also a very sad one for me. I was that mom who cried in the car when we left her. We have reached that point where she is no longer a baby, or even a toddler. She is a very independent 4-year old preschooler now. I will miss being the one that makes her lunch everyday and getting those afternoon cuddles in when she gets tired, but doesn’t want to take a nap. While I am sad that I won’t be with her during the day, I am so excited and full of curiosity with what she has been doing today.
